KOREA, 1894 (29 June; 5th month, 26th day by the Chinese calendar) official KOREAn government envelope, to the Belgian Legation at Tokio, Japan, with attached attestation reading "This is the envelope in which the official notification of the Chino-Japanese war was sent by the Corean Government to the Belgian Minister at Tokio (Baron D'Anathau), who gave it to me. 1894. Gerard Lowther". Couple of light horizontal folds and overall toning of no consequence. A rare example of KOREAn government official mail from the Chinese suzerain period of major historic importance for both KOREA and Japan, with the Russo-Japanese War resulting in Japan's assumption of administrative control over KOREA and being another act of increased Japanese militarism that resulted in conflict in the Pacific up until the middle of the 20th century. (Photo). Estimate HK$ 40,000 - 50,000 The Right Honourable Sir Gerard Augustus Bart Lowther was made Secretary of the British Legation at Tokio on 24 October 1894 and acted as Charge d'Affaires for a short time the following year. At the time of writing of this letter, he was most probably in Japan, but it is not known in what official capacity. Conflict in KOREA between Japan and China had already been building up since 1882 with Japanese intervention following internal disturbances which had resulted in an attack on the Japanese Legation in Seoul. War was averted between China, which had suzerainty over KOREA, and Japan with the signing of the Convention of Tientsin in April 1885. The 1894 Tong-kak Uprising caused the KOREAn government to request Chinese troops to suppress it, and the Japanese government claimed their presence in KOREA was a violation of the Treaty of Tientsin, so it sent its own troops to Seoul. Rioting broke out, but was soon quelled by the KOREAn government; however, neither the Japanese nor the Chinese would withdraw its troops unless the other side did. Hostilities between the two sides broke out on 25 July 1894, and a formal declaration of war was made on 1 August. Given this historical context, the above letter from the KOREAn government to the Belgian Legation probably contained a communique detailing the escalation of tensions between the two sides, given the infusion of both Chinese and Japanese troops into KOREA.
