1889, KOREA INCOMING MAIL FROM THE USA WITH VERY RARE ICHON POSTAGE DUE. U.S 5c Indigo (few flaws), tied by quartered cork, "Ocean Grove N.J. Aug. 15, 1889" circular datestamp on cover to Seoul, Korea via San Francisco and Japan, over the weight limit (double rate) and handstamped "25/T" (25 centimes deficiency) in San Francisco, postage due paid by Japan 1877 10s Blue (Scott 62), tied by boxed due marking applied in INCHON (japanese P.O in Korea), light strike of "Due 10" handstamp with amount in pencil, San Francisco and Yokohama backstamps, Fine appearance, an extremely rare mixed franking with a Japanese stamp used by the I.J.P.O. in Korea. Early postage due covers of the japanese p.o in Korea are major rarities, this cover comes from the Willard Ide Pierce correspondance, who was a mining engineer who resided in Korea in the late 1880€s in order to assess mineral development in that country. All his covers were sent care of the US Legation at Seoul, Korea.With 1996 Philatelic Foundation certificate, Sc. 216
