One of the finest - if not THE finest - existing 'Titanic' cover (most have tears or other significant faults), one of only 14 known and documented covers slated for transited on the ill-fated ship and transferred to a different vessel due to launch delay of the 'Titanic'. All known covers were mailed in March 1912 and were sent to the M.A. Winters Company in Washington, DC. This cover bears a 25c Sower stamp, tied by March 13 'Paulx Loire-Infres' postmark. To left of franking is the distinctive and bold 'TITANIC' marking, handstamped in violet, as well as a violet boxed White Star Line March 28 receiving mark (cover was likely carried aboard the 'Batavia'). Reverse of cover also features March 14 Paris marking and Washington, DC, March 27 machine cancel. The 'Titanic' was originally scheduled to set sail March 20, 1912, with a stop at Cherbourg to take on mail and passengers. We know, of course, the launch was postponed until April 10, because the vessel was not quite ready. Philatelic mementos of the 'Titanic' are extremely rare, consisting of a few covers and cards dropped off at Cherbourg or Queenstown (now Cobh, Ireland), after the liner left Southampton, but before the failed crossing, and those few marked 'Titanic' were sent to Washington in March. This well documented example is fresh and very fine, with sharp, crisp corners and only the most minor light creases. An extremely RARE and desirable exhibition piece!
